Ostrich Races Come to Sanctuary Bay

May 18, 2009- a day that will live in infamy.  Indeed, that day was the marker of the first Ostrich Race in Sanctuary Bay.

It was a calm and sunny Sanctuary afternoon, as local citizens and honored guests gathered at the Crosswinds Winery to race their fowl.  I brought along my best bird, Sabrina, whom I had taught to talk in hopes of disorienting the other riders.  Unfortunatley, much like the WB frog, Sabrina clammed-up at the event. 

Among those in attendance were AngusGraham Ceawlin, Sharrah Brendal, Artox Daviau, Laluce Wind, Carolina Questi, Bridget Jennings and other racers and spectators.  Winners included Bridget, Lewton and Janna.

The races were all in fun (I took 2nd in the first heat!) and we look forward to more races in the future.

Ship Wrecks uncovered! Mysteries solved!

No no I am not talking about the forgotten hulls left behind in Antiquity, Jabber, or Beeks. I'm talking real wrecks with names like Victory, Mermaid, Wydah. For those of you who do not know I am a scuba diver in RL. Two of my biggest passions are researching pirate lore and history and shipwrecks. So imagine my excitement when my favorite Scuba rag start publishing stories of new pirate(and navy) ships discovered. The following is a listing of recent ships and were to get more information.

The Wydah- This ship sunk in a storm in 1717. It was a slaving ship that became a pirate vessel under one Captain Samuel Bellamy. She sank off the coast of Cape Cod. She was found a few years back by Marine Archaeologist Barry Clifford and his team. Currently artifacts from The Wydah are on display at Chicago Field Museum.  Currently Clifford and his team are in search of the ships of Captain Kidd and Captain Morgan

The Queen Anne's Revenge- The infamous flag ship of one Edward Teach AKA Blackbeard. One of the most notorious and feared pirates to ever sail. This ship was originally a french slaver called the La Concorde. Blackbeard captured it and was taken by her size and beauty deiced to command her himself and gave her the now famous name. She is believed to be the largest vessel to ever sail under the command of a pirate. Her remains are still an ongoing dig site and recreational divers can dive on her after taking a special class and getting a permit. This ship sunk in 1718.

The HMS Victory - One of the biggest maritime mysteries was the fate of the HMS Victory. Sunk in 1744 the Victory was the mightiest and most technologically advanced ship in the world. She was also the last British ship to be fitted with a full compliment of bronze cannons. She went down with all hands aboard in the English Channa. The wreck was discovered by Odyssey Marine Exploration. OME have also discovered the wreckage of the Black Swan, Blue China, HMS Sussex, and many more.

The HMCS Mermaid - This ship was famous for being the Survey ship that mapped and chartered the Australian coast line and Great Barrier Reef. She was the first to chart a rout through the reef for commercial shipping. Ironically she went down on the GBR in 1829. She is also a current dig site that is divable by recreational divers with special permits.
